A note from the author

“My mother never cleaned for a whole Saturday. Her house simply stayed that way.”

I was born in 1954 in Kanazawa, in a narrow wooden house near the river. My mother kept it with one small job a day: the drawer by the stove on Monday, the shoes at the door on Tuesday. Nothing in that house was there by accident, and very little new came in without a reason.

In 1986 I married and moved to Ohio. I brought a suitcase and one good teapot. Forty years later I had a basement, a guest room nobody slept in, and a kitchen drawer that would not close. After sixty I went back to my mother's way, one drawer at a time, and the house became light again.

This guide is that habit, written down for an American home: thirty short jobs, the reason behind each one, and the Japanese words my mother used. No weekend purge, nothing new to buy.

Setsuko Hayashi

Setsuko is the storyteller of our YouTube channel Japanese Home Rules, a character we created; her stories are illustrative. The habits are real, and every fact in the guide is checked against its source.

Hear her say it

Setsuko, in her own words

Please do not try to do it all this weekend. You will be tired of it by Wednesday. I was too.

Is this for you?

It is, if

  • a kitchen drawer will not quite close, and you are not sure what is in the back of it
  • you tried a whole-weekend clear-out once and were tired of it by Wednesday
  • you have bought something again because you could not find the one you had
  • you would like your children not to have to sort it all one day

It is not, if

  • you want the whole house done in one weekend
  • you are looking for storage boxes to buy
  • you need a printed hardcover: this one is a PDF

The 30-Day Japanese Home Reset

The Japanese way of keeping house

Thirty days, fifteen minutes each, and a home that asks less of you every week.

A Japanese home is not cleaned more. It is kept, a little every day: one drawer, one shelf, one habit at a time. Every day in the guide gives you the job, the steps with amounts and times, why it works with its source, the common mistakes, and a five-minute version for a tired day.

Questions

Before you order

Is this a printed book?

No. It is a PDF that arrives by email a minute after you pay. Read it on a phone, tablet or computer, or print it at home on ordinary paper.

Is the print really large?

Yes. The main text is set at 16 to 18 points with wide spacing, so you can read it at arm's length without hunting for your glasses.

Is it a one-time payment?

Yes. You pay $19.99 once and the guide is yours to keep, with every later update included. There is no subscription and nothing renews.

Do I need Japanese products?

No. Everything in the guide is something you already have, or can find at a supermarket or hardware store.

I am not good with computers. Will I manage?

Yes. After you pay, an email arrives with one button. Press it and the guide opens, the same way a photo opens. If anything goes wrong, write to support@japanesehomerules.shop and a person answers.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes. Buy it, then forward the download email to your daughter, your sister or a friend.

What if it is not for me?

You have thirty days. Reply to the email with your receipt and we refund you in full. No forms, no questions. See the refund policy.

Is Setsuko a real person?

Setsuko Hayashi is the storyteller who narrates our channel, a character we created. The guide is written by our team. We say this plainly because you should know who you are buying from.

Day one takes fifteen minutes. You could do it tonight.

Open the drawer by the stove. Take out what has a melted edge. That is the whole first day.
